A local historian has made national headlines after being awarded the title of Ireland’s most boring man.
Ken Roman (67), who specialises in the history of refuse collection, won the poll conducted by Banter.ie after being nominated by his drinking buddies down the local.
“The lads down at the pub and at Banter.ie might thing it’s a great laugh,” said Roman, “but the joke’s on them. All they’ve done is raise awareness of the fascinating history of Irish refuse collection.”
Roman, whose works include Wheelie Good: The Wheelie Bin Revolution and Recycle This!, is planning to travel to the Banter.ie offices in person to collect his award.
“I’ve a big speech planned,” he told DTTN. “Little did our forefathers know that in 2025 we’d have separate bins for waste, compost, recycling and glass. Frank Rotherham Holdings, who created the first wheelie bin in 1968 would be proud to see how far we’ve come.”
Roman is also working on a screenplay, Refuse!, where a humble binman has to seek revenge on an organised crime gang after his daughter, and wheelie bins, are taken hostage.
“It’s a bit like Taken or John Wick, but with more wheelie bins. And there’ll be a few musical numbers. Never let it be said that refuse can’t be exciting as our protagonist takes the trash out!”
